I like this Bible Story book! I’m very picky about Bible story books; to meet my criteria the story must not contradict the Bible in any detail. The Biggest Story is accurate. I don’t like the pictures all that well, because they aren’t my style, but there isn’t anything really wrong with them (except the one of Adam and Eve is just a little more detailed than I would like). The pictures are quite decorated; they remind me of Russian Easter Eggs.

Kevin DeYoung tells the story of Jesus, starting in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. He follows the promises of God through history. When Adam and Eve sinned, God promised One who would crush the snake’s head. The promise was renewed to Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah. Then we are told the story of the Exodus, the Kings of Israel, and finally, the appearance of Jesus on earth. All the way through, God used men who were flawed, men who sinned. But God kept His promises! This is a wonderfully fresh retelling of the old, old story of the Bible.

I was reading The Biggest Story on my computer, and my 5-year-old came along and wanted to know what I was looking at. I went back to the beginning and read the entire book to him, and he seemed to enjoy it, although he didn’t quite get some of the allusions. I would say he was at the younger end of the spectrum for this one, and even older children may need to have some things explained to them. It is definitely worth taking time for, though.
