Title: Opossum Opposites
Author: Gina Gallois
Major Themes: Opossums, Marsupials, Animal Stories
Synopsis: Pictures, rhymes, and prose describe many aspects of opossum life.
I was tickled to find Opossum Opposites just before we studied a unit about marsupials for science. After we finished the study, we read this book to wrap up the topic. It was a fun way to learn a little more about these interesting animals!
Each two-page spread of this book has a beautiful painting on one side of opossums in their natural habitat, and smaller pictures on the other side, along with a four-line rhyme about some part of opossum life. In this rhyme, there are two words that are opposites (hence the title!). After the rhyme, there is a paragraph that gives more information about opossums. By reading this book, children will learn how opossum babies are born and how they live and grow, what opossums eat, and many more things about the life of these unpopular but common animals.
Opossum Opposites is one of those books that will appeal to several ages. Very young children will love just looking at the pictures. Preschoolers will enjoy the rhymes, and older children can read the paragraphs to learn yet more about the animals. This would be a perfect gift to give to an animal-loving child.
