Title: Rabbits & Raindrops
Author: Jim Arnosky
Major Themes: Rabbits, Animal Stories
Synopsis: The beautiful pictures in this book tell a delightful story about a litter of rabbits on their first day out of the nest.
We just finished studying a unit about rodents and similar mammals, and then spent a few days reading picture books about these interesting animals. One that we found was Rabbits & Raindrops. I have always loved Jim Arnosky’s books about animals. He makes the life of the animals into an interesting story, and the illustrations are wonderful! They are my favorite type of painting—so detailed they are nearly like photographs, but even better.
Mother rabbit is taking her babies out from under the hedge for the first time in their lives today. They roam around and find delicacies to nibble on, and explore their world—until it starts to rain. Then, Mother rabbit hustles them back under cover. They sit and watch the rain (my favorite picture in the book is of the rabbits all sitting in a row with their backs to us), and then, when the rain stops, they bounce back out into the sunshine to enjoy the day again.
Rabbits & Raindrops is a short book, but beautiful. It is a lovely story about a very common animal. It will appeal to any child who likes picture books about animals. Look for other books by Jim Arnosky, as well; every one I have seen has been wonderful.
