Synopsis: The fictitious diary of Princess Margaret tells the story of World War II and the growing romance of the future Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
There are not a lot of books in the public library here in our country that are worth reading. I have found, however, that the My Story books are more worthwhile than most others. They tell the story of an era of history, or a specific event, in a very interesting way. Each one is the fictitious diary of a young boy or girl involved in the event. You really get a feel for how it was to be there at the time.
Wartime Princess, the story of Her Royal Highness Elizabeth Windsor, who became Queen Elizabeth II, is the fictional diary of Princess Margaret, Elizabeth’s younger sister. She begins telling the story in 1939. Papa (the King) is concerned about the Germans. Margaret and Elizabeth are more interested in things like meeting a cousin, Philip, from Greece. Soon, terrible things begin to happen in Europe, as Hitler invades Poland and starts invading other countries as well. When England is plunged into war with Germany, the girls want to do their part, and when Elizabeth turns 18 she is allowed to join the war effort, as other girls around do. All the while, Elizabeth is learning how to become Queen, and seeing Philip as often as she can.
If you want to know what it is really like to be royalty, or what life was like in England during World War II and the Blitz, Wartime Princess is a good choice for a story. I won’t pretend it is great literature, but it is definitely a bit above the average, especially compared to most of the other books in the public library!
WARNING: I noticed one word that our family doesn’t use in each of the following diary entries: 1941, October 29 and December 5, and 1946, March 1.
