Title: The Adventures of Romy
Author: Penelope Foote
Major Themes: Wales, Horses, Gypsies, Dogs
Synopsis: Romy enjoys life with his Gypsy family, but he always wonders what it would be like to have other relatives—until everything changes suddenly.
I went to a mother’s retreat several weeks ago and met a woman who has written a couple of books. She told me about her most recent book and made me quite interested in it, and when I looked at the table where she was displaying copies of it to sell, I also saw her first book, The Adventures of Romy. It looked like a book my children would enjoy, so I bought it, as well. Yes, I have an addiction to buying books. No, I don’t want help overcoming that addiction! I believe it is very important for children to have access to a wide variety of good books.
Publisher’s description:
For as long as Romy can remember, his home has been a gypsy wagon; his life, travelling the Welsh countryside with Ma and Pa. Adventure, challenges, sacrifice and surprises are around every corner.…
One day his life changes forever. A new world awaits him as they head for Ma’s home, and there he discovers the meaning of courage, family and love.
My thoughts:
The Adventures of Romy is a beautiful story of family and love both on a human level and also God’s love for people. It is also a fun horse story and dog story, and a story about farm life in Wales in a bygone century. We all enjoyed this gentle yet interesting story; when we were a few chapters into it, my 14-year-old commented that he really liked it. This wasn’t a book that kept us on the edge of our seats with suspense, but rather a gentle account of the realistic adventures of a young boy trying to find his place in the world. I liked the way Romy’s family expressed their faith in such a natural way. I highly recommend this book as a family read-aloud.
WARNING: In chapter 2, Romy gets into a fight. There is a dog fight in chapter 26, and one dog is killed. In chapter 35, a child dies.
