I’ve been enjoying reading the books in the Lightkeepers series. Ten Girls Who Used Their Talents was especially interesting to me. I had never heard of several of the women who feature in this book. Someday, I would like to read these books to my children; the stories are quite inspiring.
Each of the ten stories in this book is 10-12 pages long. Each one tells briefly about a person’s life and what they did for God, and then there are two pages to take you a little farther. For each story there is a paragraph called Fact File, more information about something mentioned in the story. For example, in the chapter about Selina, Countess of Huntingdon, the paragraph is about John Wesley. Then there is a Keynote, a lesson we can learn from the person’s life. After that is a paragraph titled Think, which helps you to apply the lesson to your own life, and then a brief prayer asking for the Lord’s help for you.
A few of the people covered in this book were familiar to me, such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mary Verghese. I was very happy to get to read a brief biography of Patricia St. John here! I have always loved her books, and the story of her life make them even more meaningful. I had never heard of most of the other people, though, such as Maureen McKenna, Anne Lawson, and Katie Ann MacKinnon. I had heard the names of a couple of the others, but knew little or nothing about them. These well-written stories make me want to learn more about them. If you are looking for a way to introduce a number of strong Christian women to your children, this would be a great resource.
