Title: Sand Cake
Author: Frank Asch
Major Themes: Beaches
Synopsis: Baby Bear and his Papa have fun together at the beach.
I don’t normally particularly like books that involve animals acting like humans, but I really like the concept of Sand Cake. A family of bears is spending the day at the beach, and Little Bear asks his papa if he will eat a cake if Baby Bear makes it. “Sure—if it is made with real eggs, flour, and milk!” Baby Bear can’t do it, but Papa ingeniously comes up with a cake—and Baby Bear figures out a way to eat it that is just as ingenious!
Sand Cake would be a wonderful story to read to your preschooler just before a visit to a sandy beach; it would probably inspire some creative play! My little boy loves having it read to him over and over at home, too.
