Title: Mummies Made in Egypt
Author: Aliki
Major Themes: Ancient Egypt, Mummies
Synopsis: Colorful pictures and detailed, simple text tell all about how and why mummies were made in Ancient Egypt.
When you think of Egypt, what do you think of? Could mummies be on the list? We’ve been studying Ancient Egypt lately, and one of the books I read with the children was Mummies Made in Egypt. They enjoyed this colorful picture book.
Intricate, painted drawings show every step a person’s body went through in the process of mummification. When a person died, the priests began the process, which took over two months. Clear, but detailed, text tells the story of what was happening. After mummification was finished, more pictures show the burial. There is also a small amount of information about Egyptian gods and how bodies mummified naturally before it became such a complicated ritual.
My 6-year-old was quite excited to have found Mummies Made in Egypt on our shelf recently. I had been looking for it and hadn’t found it, but when we reorganized all our books, she found it. I was glad—I had been wanting to read it with them. She sat down and studied all the pictures by herself, and then again several days later when I read it to her and my 11- and 9-year-olds. I found out later how much she understood of this book when she told all about the process of making a mummy in a story she wrote to share with our homeschool group. If you’re studying Egypt, this book would be a very good one to read.
