We have been enjoying the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series for many years. I started reading them aloud to my family some 15 years ago, when my oldest was fairly young. I wish we would be able to buy the whole set—they are that good! If money weren’t an issue, we would own them. As it is, if I find one of these books used, I snatch it up. My children love them, too. We do a reading challenge every summer. If they read for 10-15 minutes every day through the month of January, I will buy them a book. My 14-year-old chose Lottie Moon: Giving Her All for China for his reward this year, and then requested that I read it aloud so everyone could enjoy it.
Lottie was born into a wealthy Southern family in Virginia in 1840. Despite the death of her father when she was only 13, Lottie received a good education. She wanted nothing to do with Christianity, however, except to ridicule it—until one day she went to church to make fun of Christians and ended up becoming one! Then, the Civil War broke out and the family lost nearly everything.
After the war, Lottie became a teacher, working with girls in a war-ravaged town in Georgia. She received a shock, though, when she learned that her younger sister was on her way to China as a missionary. Suddenly, Lottie knew what she wanted with her life: to be a missionary. She turned her focus to that goal, and before too long she was headed to China as well. She spent most of the rest of her life there, working with the Chinese people and trying to make changes in the mission board’s policies to make life a little easier for the missionaries. Serving God through easier times and very hard times, she finally even gave her life for the Chinese people.
I didn’t find Lottie Moon quite as easy to read as some of the others in the series, but the message in it is powerful. My son who chose the book commented that this was a very good book. It’s certainly challenging! Lottie lived by faith and got her strength from the Lord. We highly recommend this book—it should be read by every Christian!
