Title: Johnny Appleseed
Author: Will Moses
Major Themes: John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed, American Frontier, Pioneer Life, Apples
Synopsis: In text and folk art-style pictures, the story of an American frontier legend is told.
We read two picture books about Johnny Appleseed this week, this one and one written by Gini Holland. This one, written and illustrated by Will Moses, goes into a lot more detail about the famous frontier nurseryman’s life. We read it all in one sitting—but that was because I had a job to do that took awhile but which I could do while reading aloud! I enjoyed the story, but we didn’t like the pictures as well as the ones in the other book. They are more the American folk art style, rather stylized instead of realistic. I did enjoy the detailed descriptions of how John Chapman planted orchards and grew and sold trees as well as apples. We also enjoyed the picture of him riding a cake of ice down the river—which apparently really happened!
WARNING: The word “darn” is used twice. No page numbers, so I can’t easily tell you where.
