Title: Dolly the Milk Cow
Author: Helga Moser
Series: Pleasant Valley Farm series, book 5
Major Themes: Cows, Farm Life
Synopsis: Dolly led the cows to the barn every day promptly at 4:00—until she was late one day.
I rarely buy hardcover, full-color children’s picture books, because they cost so much. I made an exception, however, when I saw Dolly the Milk Cow. We have all the other books in this series, and of course, we needed this one to complete the set! And, a book about a cow? Of course, we need it—our two cows are an important part of our life!
Dolly was a very old cow. She was the gentlest, kindest cow in the herd on Pleasant Valley Farm, and she was the leader of the herd. Every day at 4:00, she led the herd back to the barn, and they always followed her. Then, one day in February, she was late. She had slipped and fallen on the ice. Would she ever realize that she could trust Farmer Don to help her safely reach the barn?
Dolly the Milk Cow is a beautiful book. It actually reminds us of James Herriot’s Treasury for Children. The engaging story would hold children’s attention by itself, but the pictures are something else again! They are gorgeous. Every one of them is a colorful painting with incredible detail. My two-year-old loves to study them and hear the story. This book is a treasure that will hold a special place on our shelf for years to come.
