Wonderfully Made by Danika Cooley

Title: Wonderfully Made
Author: Danika Cooley
Major Themes: Babies, Reproduction, Pregnancy, Christian Non-fiction, Family Life, Picture Books
Synopsis: In a very discrete and God-honoring way, the story of life from conception to birth is told for young children.

I thought about Wonderfully Made for several years before I had an excuse to buy it. When I discovered we had been blessed with a healthy pregnancy again, that gave me the excuse I was looking for, and my 4-year-old and I have been enjoying reading a page every week or two, to see what new developments our little baby has made.

I appreciated the very discrete way the beginning of life was described in this book; the author simply says that God made a way for a husband and wife to join together to show their love, and when they did this an egg and sperm were able to come together. At the end of the book, labor is described equally discretely; Danika Cooley simply says that it was hard, painful work for both the mother and baby.

In between the beginning and end, each page tells about what is happening with the baby during a week or two of pregnancy. It is absolutely incredible to read about all the amazing development that happens in the first 12 or 13 weeks! After about week 30, there are not so many new things to describe, so several weeks are lumped together. Every page has at least one Scripture verse about how God made us, and at the very end of the book, God’s way of salvation is briefly described: You were born, and you need to be born again in order to have eternal life.

I am thankful to have gotten Wonderfully Made. It has been a good resource to help my little girl understand what is going on with her little sibling, whom we will meet very soon now. I did not want anything that was explicit about the way babies are formed, but I did want something to help us know what was happening, and Wonderfully Made has provided that.
