Title: Walter the Baker
Author: Eric Carle
Major Themes: Food, Baking, Pretzels
Synopsis: When he makes a mistake in baking his sweet rolls, the Duke banishes Walter from the Duchy—unless he can invent something new by morning.
We loved Walter the Baker when we got it from the library! My little boys wanted it read to them over and over. A few days ago, I even saw my 10-year-old, a very reluctant reader, reading it to his little brothers! This was the first time he ever read them a book, to my knowledge. Obviously, he liked the book, too.
Walter is a wonderful baker, and the Duke and Duchess eat his sweet rolls every morning. One morning, however, the cat knocks over the milk and Walter uses water in the rolls instead. The Duke and Duchess are angry and banish him. He pleads to be allowed to stay, and the Duke relents—on condition that Walter invent a special roll. He spends all night baking, and finally, by accident, invents the perfect roll, which fulfills the Duke’s conditions. They name the new food “pretzel”!
