A couple of years ago, I read Unyielding Hope by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, until I got to the last page. The last sentence was, “and we’re probably guilty.” With an ending like that, I just had to read the next book. I didn’t realize Sustaining Faith had been written, however, until I saw the third book not too long ago. Now I get to read the entire series in one go. What fun!
Lillian and Grace have been caring for children in Lillian’s childhood home while her father is in Wales after her adopted mother’s death. Having grown up in a children’s home, Grace is very sensitive to the needs of hurting children, and will take in any child that needs a home. However, someone does not like what they’re doing. They end up traveling to Lethbridge, to the children’s home that Grace was working with before she went to Brookfield with Lillian, after they reconnected in the first book. Meanwhile, Ben, a sailor, comes across a little girl in England who needs a home and family. As he searches for his own family, he travels with little Jane across the Atlantic and then across Canada.
When Ben arrives at the children’s home in Lethbridge, he, Lillian, and Grace come to realize something is rotten in the system of resettling “home” children from England. Is there anything they can do about it? Lillian struggles with what is right and what is wrong and tries to trust Grace and Walter, her childhood friend.
Sustaining Faith is a gripping story. Lots of people in the story need to learn to trust each other as well as to trust God. This book, too, ends with a cliffhanger. I normally make myself write a review of one book before I read its sequel, but this time I just jumped right into the next book because I could hardly wait to find out what happened. I’m appreciating seeing how Lillian and Grace care for the children that end up in their care. It’s inspiring to see how much love they show to them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
