Monks and Mystics by Mindy and Brandon Withrow

Title: Monks and Mystics
Author: Mindy and Brandon Withrow
Series: History Lives series, Volume 2: Chronicles of the Medieval Church
Major Themes: Church History, Middle Ages
Synopsis: Twelve fascinating stories of famous people in the Christian church from approximately 550-1500 AD.

Like the first volume in this series, Peril and Peace, we found Monks and Mystics to be absolutely fascinating. Mindy and Brandon Withrow have done a superb job of bringing the medieval church to life through stories of famous people from various times. Some are heroes; some (in my opinion) are villains. All are real people who really lived. Also included are short chapters between the longer stories of the people, about various topics such as how the pope came to be called that, what Islam is, or the Crusades. All in all, this is a good supplement to any study of the Middle Ages, and I’m glad to have found it to read to my boys!

Other Books in This Series:
  • Peril and Peace
  • Courage and Conviction
  • Hearts and Hands
  • Rescue and Redeem

WARNING: A few stories are somewhat graphic about persecution.

Age levels:

Listening Level—Ages 8 – 12, 10 – 12, Family Friendly
Reading Independently—Ages  10 – 12, 12 – 15
