Title: Hidden Tales of Eastern Europe
Author: retold by Antonia Barber
Major Themes: Folk Tales
Synopsis: This is a collection of folk tales told by people in Eastern Europe for many centuries.
We don’t read very many books like this one. Generally, we stick to realistic stories, books about people around the world and through time, stories that could have really happened. Once in awhile, though, because we’re still using Sonlight Curriculum to a certain extent, we read something like Hidden Tales From Eastern Europe. We really enjoyed it.
There are seven beautifully illustrated stories in this book, from countries such as Slovakia, Russia, and Croatia. Some are just fairy tales, and some are more realistic. Most of them show some sort of a lesson, but all of them are fun to read. I especially liked the story about the shepherd king. Even if you’re a king, you should learn a trade, because you never know when you’ll be shipwrecked and have to make your own living. In fact, one of my boys read an entire long story from this book aloud to his brothers before I ever got to it, just because he liked it so well!
If you want a change of pace from more educational books, or just want something fun for your children, look for this book. I think you’ll enjoy it.
