Title: Guzzy Goofball and the Homeschool Play from Outer Space
Author: S. A. J. Lyttek
Major Themes: Drama, Homeschooling
Synopsis: When his mother signs him up for a drama co-op, Guzzy’s summer is dramatically changed—how will he cope?
I don’t normally read books with covers like this one. They just don’t appeal to me. I tend to go for historical novels, or books written in the ’40s, ’50s, or ’60s. When I noticed the word “homeschool” in the title of Guzzy Goofball, though, I decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a decent story! The title is slightly misleading, though. I was thoroughly confused by what the play was about until close to the end of the story!
Guzzy’s mother and her friend, the mother of Guzzy’s best friend Shriek, discovered an advertisement in the homeschool newsletter for a new co-op that was running a free drama workshop. They decided their children would be interested in it. The only good part, in Guzzy’s mind? A week away from his toddler twin brothers! He and Shriek agreed to the plan.
What fairy tale would the co-op perform? Who would be the stars of the show? Was there any possible way Guzzy could get out of kissing a girl? And how could he possibly cope when his mother volunteered to help with the costumes, meaning that the twins would be at the church every time the children practiced? You’ll have to read the book to learn about the terrible problems Guzzy ran into. It gets pretty hilarious. Oh, and Guzzy’s name? It turns out to be short for—no, I’ll let you read the book to find that out, too.
Yes, I enjoyed this book as much as I can enjoy any book aimed at boys. It was clean and decent, and very realistic. I know my boys will enjoy it. If you’re looking for a book for boys that’s a little different from most, give Guzzy a try.
