Title: George Washington’s Breakfast
Author: Jean Fritz
Major Themes: George Washington, Food, Easy Readers, American Revolution, Historical Fiction
Synopsis: A boy who loves learning about George Washington suddenly realizes that he doesn’t know what the great man ate for breakfast!
We read some books just for fun! George Washington’s Breakfast was one of those. Of course, it helps that it went along with our history studies, too. It was fun to read about George’s quest to learn about George Washington’s breakfast menu.
George W. Allen felt like he was almost related to George Washington, since he was named for him and they shared a birthday. He wanted to know everything about his hero—and suddenly he realized he didn’t know what the great man ate every morning! How could he find out, so that his grandma, who refused to help him search, would make it and he could experience the same thing?
Books from the library didn’t help, even though George’s parents helped him read them. A visit to Mount Vernon didn’t help; the guard didn’t know what Washington ate every morning. The Allens went back home, with George discouraged but not ready to give up. Where would he find the information he wanted?
As we followed George’s quest, we learned a lot of trivia about Washington’s life and habits, as well as about ways to research topics of interest. We enjoyed the story, too—and several people had figured out where he would find his answers before he did! As I said, George Washington’s Breakfast is a very fun way to learn history!
