Title: Exploring Creation With Chemistry and Physics
Author: Jeannie K. Fulbright
Series: Young Explorer series
Major Themes: Chemistry, Physics, Science
Synopsis: With interesting text, colorful photos, and detailed diagrams, Jeanne Fulbright introduces children to the concepts of chemistry and physics.
For the past eight years, we have been using Apologia’s Young Explorer series for science for our elementary-aged children. I really like these books. Jeannie Fulbright has done an incredible amount of research and written very interesting, informative textbooks. I may have studied chemistry in high school, but I don’t really remember; I know I did not ever study physics. Therefore, Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics was new to me as well as to the children. I really enjoyed this book, and learned a lot.
This book is divided into 14 chapters, or “lessons,” with the first five covering chemistry and the rest physics. In the first five lessons, we learned what matter is and the three states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. Then, we learned about atoms and molecules. We wrapped up our study of chemistry with a lesson about compounds and another one about mixtures.
We kicked off our study of physics with a lesson about mechanics and Newton’s laws of motion. Then, we learned about friction, gravity, and centripetal force. After that, we had a lesson about energy, the forms of energy, and how it is generated. Next, we had a lesson about sound and one about light. The next lesson was about thermal energy and heat and then we had one about electricity. We learned about magnets next, and the last lesson was about simple machines, including inclined planes, wedges, three types of levers, pulleys, wheels and axles, and gears.
We spent three or four days reading each lesson, with one or several experiments in each section to illustrate the point being taught. Almost all of these experiments are done with common household items, although there are several we couldn’t do because we can’t get some things here. The children really enjoyed the ones we were able to do, though. To help remember everything we learned, I bought a downloadable workbook and a lap book set from Teachers Pay Teachers. We learned a lot this year from Exploring Creation With Chemistry and Physics, and I’ve been amazed at what the children remember.
