We spent a week this month learning about Daniel Boone. We read several books about him, and have been listening to one as well. What a fascinating character—and a stubborn one! Each of the books we found added a little bit to the picture of this man. We loved the illustrations in A Picture Book of Daniel Boone.
This beautiful picture book takes children through the life of the great explorer from his birth in Pennsylvania to the end of his life in Missouri. The pictures show him as a wagon driver for Braddock’s army at the beginning of the French and Indian War and a trapper exploring Kentucky. Other pictures show him when he escaped from Indian captivity to warn Boonsborough, and his daughter and several other girls who were captured by the Indians. These pictures are beautifully detailed, rich full-color paintings.
This book is a wonderful introduction to history for young children. Though Boone’s life was often very violent and bloody, this does not show those parts, but only the nicer details. Children who like true stories (in my experience, most young children are this way) will love to hear this book read to them, and it would be a good one to give an older child who needs something a little more challenging than a beginning reader.
