Daddy on the Mend by Tina Fehr

Title: Daddy on the Mend
Author: Tina Fehr
Series: The Fehr Family series, book 1
Major Themes: Accidents, Family Read-alouds, Christian Fiction, Family Life, Books for Boys
Synopsis: When Daddy breaks his leg and spends the entire summer mending, Andrew must learn patience.

A few years ago, when I was placing an order for schoolbooks, one of my boys requested that I also buy a storybook that caught his eye, More Trouble Than Trouble Creek. The boys all enjoyed that story, so I bought the first book in the series, Daddy on the Mend, for that boy’s next birthday. We just finished reading it this week, and I appreciated the gentle story about a Godly family.

Andrew’s family got to have a picnic with Daddy at the place where he was building a roof. Soon after they left, however, they got a call that Daddy had fallen off the roof and was in the hospital. After a surgery, he was able to come home—but he was not the Daddy the children knew! He had to sit around or lay in bed, and he was not able to do things that Andrew needed done. Could Andrew learn the patience he needed?

Throughout the summer, the family had to help out as Daddy couldn’t do the things he normally did. They were grateful for the help of their church family, and for the things Daddy found ways to do. Baby Sharilyn was delighted with the fruit and vegetable stand that Daddy opened! When it was time for school to start, Daddy was able to help with the teaching in their homeschool, because he was at home, on the mend.

Daddy on the Mend is a delightful story for the 6-8-year-old crowd, showing how a Christian family should work together. Many lessons are taught, about patience and helping others, and about trusting God to take care of us.
