Around the World With Kate and Mac by Melissa Paredes

Title: Around the World With Kate and Mac
Author: Melissa Paredes
Major Themes: Bible, Translation, Language, Culture, Literacy, Geography, Missionaries
Synopsis: Children from cultures around the world explain how they came to have the Bible, or parts of it, in their own language, and why that is so important.

One thing I really appreciate about using Sonlight Curriculum is that we end up reading books that I probably would never buy, or even hear of, otherwise. One of those that we just finished after working our way through it for a year is Around the World with Kate and Mac. My third-grade daughter, who was in second grade when we started reading through this book, enjoyed learning about various parts of the world and the people who live there.

Each letter of the alphabet has an article about a people group somewhere who are in the process of getting the Bible in their own language or have just recently gotten it. Each article describes the culture a little bit as the speaker, usually a child or young adult, explains why they were so excited to get the Bible in their language, and how much of it they have. Then, there is a page of random facts about the country and its people. The information given includes unique animals that live there, or interesting crops grown there. Maps throughout the book highlight where each culture lives, and at the end of the book, there is another map that shows them all together.

I found Around the World with Kate and Mac to be a very good resource for geography, as well as introducing children to the need of people around the world to have more of the Scripture in their heart language. My daughter looked forward to reading this book every week when it came up in the instructor’s guide. She loved seeing the parrot, Mac, who appears on every page, and hearing the little stories about the children living in various parts of the world.
