Title: Advent
Author: Chautona Havig
Major Themes: Christmas
Synopsis: When Lita became interested in Curtis, she did all she could to become his friend.
I participated in a reading challenge this year, and for the first time ever, I completed it! This challenge was simple; there were twelve prompts, one for each month, and the idea was to read a book from my shelves each month that fit the prompt. I had fun searching my shelves for books I wanted to read that fit the prompt, and got to read several that I had on my TBR pile for a long time. The prompt for November was “a book with a white cover,” so I started by looking over the books by Chautona Havig, and found Advent. I read this one a number of years ago, but I never mind rereading her books, so I chose this one.
Lita worked in the same office as Curtis for three years. All she knew about him was that he had a good work ethic, his briefcase was falling apart, and he often left the office in a rush, looking worried. Then one day, he showed up at her house with some paperwork that their boss wanted her to have immediately. She fed him, and decided that it was time to get to know this enigmatic man.
Over the course of the next month, Lita learned why Curtis was the way he was, and did all she could to bring him out of his shell. She fell in love with the way he cared for his mother who had Alzheimer’s—but how could she get past her own issues so she wouldn’t hurt him? Could the two find a way to build a life together? She knew that a man who treated his mother the way he treated his was a man she wanted to spend her life with—but, at times, everything in her just wanted to run.
Lita’s frequent tears are a little annoying, as is her pursuit of Curtis. However, I liked the discussion about true Christianity versus living for self under the guise of being a committed Christian. Some very real truths are presented there. Overall, Advent isn’t one of my favorite Chautona Havig books, but for a Christmas romance, it is delightful.
