We have been working our way through the Amish Frontier series, reading a chapter a day. My boys aren’t finding it as interesting as our last series, the Grandma’s Attic books, but are still enjoying it.
A Song for the King begins where Book 2, The Treasure Hunt, leaves off. The Yoder family is living in Colorado, spending the summer a hundred miles from home. They are harvesting produce at Ordway because their farms at Wild Horse have dried up in the drought. After an eventful summer of learning to love people who are different from themselves, and forgive those who call them Kaiser-Lovers after World War I breaks out, they travel back home by wagon. Then, they move to Montana and face a new set of challenges!
Lydia has a lot to learn about getting along with other girls near her age who have a lot more of this world’s goods than her family does. Is it true that the richer girls look down on her? Or is she just imagining that? Can she be content with what she has? Her parents patiently try to teach her to live as Jesus wants her to.
This series tells simple stories of pioneer life. There is not a lot of drama; these stories are actually very realistic, rather than exaggerated, accounts of daily life. As such, children who are used to very exciting stories might be bored. I believe, however, that stories like this are very good for younger children. They illustrate a Godly lifestyle, teaching life lessons in a gentle way.
