Several months ago, I had the privilege of reading Dare to Dream Again, a short novella sharing the story of a woman who was working as a cook for her church’s VBS. She met a man there who was always invading on “her” ground…and she ended up falling in love with him. It was a quick, fun read—and after finding out that the next book in the series, What Dreams May Come, was based on the author’s own love story, I knew I had to get my hands on it sometime! I wasn’t disappointed when I got it for free in exchange for participating in a blog tour, either. This book is a keeper!

Susannah’s just gone through four months of emotional turmoil, and the end still isn’t in sight. Four months ago, she was looking forward to meeting the man she had fallen in love with—even though they had never seen each other face-to-face yet!—and hoping he’d propose to her. Then, her mother died, leaving her saddled with the responsibility of sole caregiver for her special needs sister. After being forced to call off the relationship because she doesn’t want to hinder Scott’s calling to the mission field, Susannah wonders if she’ll ever be able to find true happiness again.

Will she ever be able to stop thinking about him—and missing him, even though they’ve never met in-person? And will they both be able to come to peace about the situation as it is now?

Ahh. In so many ways, What Dreams May Come is a lovely story. I think my favorite part was the grieving and questioning process that Susannah went through. Not because that part was “lovely”, as such, but because it was so realistic. And some of the lessons she learned along the way are ones I’ve learned, too, in the aftermath of grief, or ones that could still be applicable for me. The ending was satisfying, which was wonderful as well (albeit expected), but Susannah’s struggles to accept that God had a plan even in what seemed directly opposite to her “calling” was the most helpful to me. God directs our steps. He knows what we’re going through, and has a plan for our future. And although it may seem to be turned around completely backward at times, He still cares, and He’s still working.

In the end, I was very thankful I had the chance to read this story, and look forward to the next one in the series as well!
