Title: Troubled Waters
Author: Rene Gutteridge
Major Themes: Forgiveness
Synopsis: Macey had secrets that had kept her from allowing anyone too close to her for many years, and now it was too late to reconcile with her father—could she ever find freedom now?
I think it was five years ago I was given a copy of Troubled Waters. It was sent to my mom’s house, and then I got it later. She told me that she couldn’t put it down, so I was looking forward to it myself, but never got around to it until last month. Well, now I understand what she meant. I could hardly put it down either. This is not a book with lots of action, at least external action. The conflict is inside of the character. Somehow, to me, that makes a very gripping story when it’s well done, which this one is.
Macey had run away from Kansas many years ago. She loved her parents, but she felt like her father had chased her away. She had never told anyone what happened to cause that. She kept her shame deeply buried inside of her. Now, her father died and a friend tracked her down and gave her the message, so she went back home to help her mother bury her father. Then, she was headed back to the city and her high-powered life as a television anchor. Nothing could sidetrack the plans she had for her life!
Meeting her mother’s neighbor, Noah, was not in her plan. Neither was going inside the house that held her worst memories. She found herself doing both though, and, unaccountably, kept going back to see Noah. She couldn’t possibly tell him her deepest, darkest secret, though. It was very annoying that he kept talking about God the same way her mother did. He even acted as though God was his personal friend!
Troubled Waters is an amazing story about how God can heal a life that has been torn apart, and heal relationships that have been destroyed by sin. I appreciated the theme of this book, that the truth shall set you free but hiding evil and shame will keep you in bondage. Rene Gutteridge has crafted a very powerful story. I look forward to reading more books by her someday in the future.
