Title: The Deep Time Deception
Author: Michael J. Oard
Major Themes: Creation, Evolution
Synopsis: In a very readable style, with many illustrations, this book exposes the deception of deep time and why the issue matters.
One topic that fascinates me is the controversy between Creation and Evolution. I really enjoy reading about evidence that points to Creation. A few years ago, a friend was buying a bulk lot of The Deep Time Deception and asked if I wanted one. It sounded good, but I didn’t get around to reading it until now. When I finally did pick it up, I found it very readable and interesting.
Michael Oard focuses this book on the theory of deep time—that the universe and the earth are billions of years old. Is there evidence to prove this, or does the evidence seem to show that the earth is young? Using many photographs, charts, and graphs, he discusses where the idea of deep time began. The evidence can seem to point to a very old earth—unless you consider that possibly Noah’s Flood reset the clocks. If that is factored in, everything makes much more sense.
About half of this book discusses dating systems. Several chapters describe how various dating methods work. I found this very informative and easy to understand. Some of these methods were ones I had heard of and learned about before, but some were new to me. He also shows the faulty assumptions that are used to supposedly prove deep time from things tested with these methods.
Why does this discussion even matter? Is it really a matter of salvation, whether or not the earth is old or young? Read chapter 9 to find out, and chapter 10 to see what happens when people try to force deep time into the Bible.
As I said already, The Deep Time Deception is written in a non-scholarly style that I was able to read and understand easily, without rereading much of anything. It is a fairly short book with many illustrations breaking up the text. At the same time, it is obvious from reading it that Michael Oard knows what he is talking about and has done his research well. The copious footnotes gave me confidence that what he says is backed up by scientific literature. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Creation/Evolution controversy.
