Title: The Aesop for Children
Illustrated by Milo Winter
Major Themes: Fables, Stories
Synopsis: Over 100 stories written by a slave some 2,000 years ago are retold, with beautiful illustrations.
We have loved this edition of Aesop’s Fables ever since we first read it, many years ago. Not only have I read it aloud several times, but my children have spent a lot of time studying the wonderful pictures. The Aesop for Children, illustrated by Milo Winter, is a beautiful book!
There are well over 100 of the famous, 2,000-year-old fables in this book, with beautiful, color pictures to illustrate most of them. Though this book was first published in 1919, it is still very attractive to children. Whether or not they will understand any of the morals is another question, but the stories are worth reading. We enjoy reading a story or two a day.
Some of these stories are very well-known, such as The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, The Goose and the Golden Egg, and The North Wind and the Sun. Others, though, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere else, such as The Dogs and the Hides, or The Oxen and the Wheels. Each one features an animal or several animals who illustrate some human trait, or teach a lesson.
WARNING: A few Greek gods are mentioned; I’m seeing Hercules, Mercury, and a Satyr.
