Title: Tarnished Silver
Author: Chautona Havig
Major Themes: Christmas, Marriage, Romance
Synopsis: When her cleaner discovers a long-hidden secret, Audrey’s life is in danger of being turned upside-down.
As you have probably already figured out, Chautona Havig is one of my favorite authors. I buy very few books new, and my Kindle is mostly full of books I got free. However, I am willing to buy Chautona’s books—especially when she offers them for only 99¢ occasionally! Tarnished Silver was my most recent purchase, and I found it quite a worthwhile read.
I did know the ending ahead of time, because HearthLand is set a year or two after Tarnished Silver, and gives it away—but that did not detract very much from my enjoyment, as I wanted to know HOW the ending came about. I also greatly appreciated the discussions about marriage. God’s plan for marriage, in the Bible, is upheld, and I really like the emphasis on keeping your vows.
The story begins with Audrey Seever, the owner of the Confectionery, where she makes and sells candy, cookies, and cakes. Her business is booming—but her house is a wreck. On the spur of the moment, she hires Kelly Cox (who I met and learned to love in A Bird Died) to clean for her. While cleaning one day, Kelly accidentally stumbles across a paper that was supposed to be hidden and learns of something which Audrey has kept secret for 25 years. What will Kelly do with this information? Will she make herself forget about it and mind her own business? Or will she dig deeper into Audrey’s personal affairs? You will love the twists and turns of the plot as Kelly struggles with her conscience.
As always, Chautona has managed to weave together a great story with delightful, real characters, and lessons for life from the Bible. And also, as always, I love how clean her story is, with absolutely no bad language and no descriptions of anything physical between lovers, beyond the bare mention occasionally of a kiss.
