Title: Sarah Morton’s Day
Author: Kate Waters
Major Themes: Colonial America, Massachusetts, Pilgrims, Plymouth
Synopsis: Words and pictures follow a young Pilgrim girl through a typical day in 1627.
I’ve loved books like Sarah Morton’s Day ever since I discovered them at the library back in the 1980s. There are several of these books by Kate Waters, which are profusely illustrated with photographs of interpreters at Plimouth Plantation, showing how the Pilgrims lived a few years after the landing of the Mayflower.
Sarah is nine years old in this story, which illustrates a typical day in November 1627. Through the pictures, you can follow her through the day, beginning with getting dressed in the morning, and then helping with chores, such as cooking and milking the goat. She also has time to visit and play games with a friend during the day, and has a lesson in reading and writing. You will also get a peek into her heart, as she tries to learn to love her new stepfather, and tries to please him by learning a psalm by heart.
If you can’t go to Massachusetts and visit Plymouth Plantation for yourself, a book like this is next best! We have enjoyed it each time we read it. The clear photography brings the time to life very well.
