Title: Red, Yellow, Black & White
Author: Dwayne & Lois Stoltzfus
Major Themes: Children, Poverty, Geography
Synopsis: In gentle, easy text and beautiful color photographs, young children are introduced to other children who live in poverty and war-stricken places around the globe.
This is a beautiful little book! My sister just sent it to us, and I read it to my 3-year-old a few days ago. He enjoyed it, as did I.
Red, Yellow, Black & White takes us on a trip around the world, visiting children who live in less-than-ideal circumstances. Among other places, we visit Haiti, Liberia, China, and Afghanistan. There are 3-5 color photos of children from each country, giving little glimpses into the way they live. This is a perfect way to gently introduce young children to poverty and war, and the effect on other little children who live in such places. It’s also a great accompaniment to a study of world geography, if you find the countries on a map or globe after reading the book. Of course, you can just read it to your preschooler as well. Since young children like to see pictures of other children, they will enjoy this one.
