Synopsis: What things will make it easier to travel with children?
What does it sound like to travel with a family? What about traveling internationally with 12 children? I have done it with as many as seven, several of whom were old enough to watch out for themselves and others, and I can tell you, it’s not easy! The Flanders family, however, has done a lot of traveling, not only around the United States but also in many other parts of the world, with their growing family of up to twelve. Jennifer Flanders tells how they do it, and gives many tips for success, in Pack Up & Leave. I found this book quite interesting, entertaining, and helpful.
Pack Up & Leave is divided into 112 one-page chapters, in 14 sections. These sections have topics such as planning and packing advice, inexpensive activities to do with your family, and how to eat and sleep for less. There are also pointers from this homeschooling family about how to make traveling even more educational. I had never thought about touring factories, besides the one my husband worked in for several years, but it sounds very interesting and fun!
I have heard many of Jennifer’s tips before, and there were a number of things she mentioned that we already do when traveling, but to have all this information together in one place is invaluable! I will be referring to it for ideas before big trips. A bonus that comes with the book is access to a PDF of some travel games she has prepared. The Travel Bingo game looks fun; I remember playing that when I was little. She has a lot of ideas for ways to keep children happy on long drives; this is just one of them. If traveling with children sounds scary, read Pack Up & Leave. You will find a lot of help to make it more doable. And, even if you can’t physically travel, Jennifer has shared some wonderful wisdom about that, as well. One quote that really stood out to me was, Being fully present is something you can do right where you are, right now—even if it’s just within the four walls of your own home. So true! She also suggests what my Dad called a five-minute vacation: stop and enjoy what you have right now.
I received a free copy of this book from BookCrash, and these are my honest thoughts about it.
