Synopsis: Andrew’s parents do their best to help their children learn to love each other.
My children did a read-aloud challenge for the month of January this year. I offered them various prizes through the month, and the grand prize, for not missing a single day, was that I bought them a book. Four of the six who started the challenge won a book! My 7-year-old chose More Trouble Than Trouble Creek; I think he was quite intrigued by the title. When it was his turn to choose a book to read aloud together a couple of weeks ago, this is the one he chose.
Andrew, his brother, and two sisters are all homeschooled by their mother. They live in Canada, and love to go play in the creek that runs across their land, and the woods that the creek runs through. For Andrew’s birthday, he is thrilled to not have to do school. Even better, his cousins come over to play. The boys try to sneak away to the creek alone, but the girls see them. To his disgust, Andrew has to let the girls come along. That’s only the beginning of the day’s trouble, though. When one of the girls distracts him, Andrew loses his balance and falls off a log into the creek! The children decide that they ought to name it Trouble Creek.
Andrew continues to have trouble getting along with his brother and sisters. It doesn’t help when he feels sick. Daddy and Mom try to teach the children to love each other, and they study the Love Chapter together. Everyone works together to write a “Love Chapter for Brothers and Sisters,” and they work together to make things to sell at a benefit yard sale.
Your children will relate to Andrew’s struggles to appreciate his siblings, and you will appreciate watching Daddy and Mom try to help them. I liked that the story is about a homeschooling family! The characters were real, not too perfect.
