Synopsis: Loren Cunningham, the founder of Youth With a Mission, led a life of faith.
We’ve always enjoyed the Christian Heroes: Then & Now books. All the children seem to like it when we start reading a new one aloud, and we save them for when Daddy is able to listen, because he loves them, too! Our most recent was about someone we had hardly even heard of before, Loren Cunningham.
Loren’s parents were both ministers with the Assemblies of God. They did street preaching in various places and frequently moved from one church to another to minister for a time. Loren and his sister grew up helping with services all the time, but what did God want Loren to do with his life? At the age of 20, while on a tour of the Bahamas with the quartet he was part of, he got the first part of the answer.
The answer was a vision of waves of young people spilling over a world map. What did it mean? What was he to do with it? During the next few years, Loren started to see what God wanted of him, as he began organizing small groups of young people to go on short-term mission trips. Over the next couple of decades, this grew into the worldwide organization, Youth With a Mission.
This is a fascinating, challenging story of faith, listening to God, and living for God. The story of Youth With a Mission, or YWAM, is an amazing story of miracle after miracle. If you want to read a true story of a man who heard from God and did what he was told, read Loren Cunningham: Into All the World.
