Synopsis: Faced with the challenge to prove evolution, a doctor sets out on a lifelong, worldwide mission to gather evidence.
For the last six months or so, we’ve been reading a few pages every morning from the two books in the series Evolution: The Grand Experiment. All of us have enjoyed them to a greater or lesser extent, and all of us have learned things from them. I found Living Fossils extremely interesting, both because of the fossils, and also because of Dr. Carl Werner’s personal story, which is woven through the book.
Raised a believer, Carl drifted away from his beliefs in God during high school, and in the beginning of medical school he wholeheartedly accepted evolution as true. Until…a fellow student challenged him to prove evolution. That “simple” challenge set him off on a lifelong journey, which hasn’t ended yet, to my knowledge. After studying evolution for 18 years, he made a prediction. This was “that if evolution were not true, then animals and plants would not change significantly over time.” Therefore, “I predicted I should find fossils of modern animal and plant species in the ‘older’ fossil layers.” Off he set, with his wife, to museums around the world to photograph fossils in search of those that looked like modern forms.
Most of this book shows photographs of modern animals, from every major group, as well as modern plants of every major group, with photographs of similar fossils to go along with as many as possible. In every case, even when he was not able to photograph the fossils or museum displays of reconstructions of the animal or plant, he has quotes from scientists and museum curators stating that modern-appearing fossils of these organisms do exist. They are not on display in most cases, but they have been found.
This book will amaze you and build up your faith. When we finished it, there was only one conclusion each of us could come to. We quite enjoyed reading Living Fossils as well as enjoying the wonderful photography in it.
