Title: Johnny Appleseed
Author: Gini Holland
Major Themes: John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed, American Frontier, Pioneer Life
Synopsis: The life of John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) is told with brief text and beautiful pictures.
Sonlight used this story about Johnny Appleseed, by Gini Holland, for a number of years, in their kindergarten curriculum. Apparently, it is out of print at this point, which is sad. The illustrations, by Kim Palmer, are beautiful and realistic. We read it this week, along with another book titled simply Johnny Appleseed by Will Moses. We agreed that we like the pictures better in this one by Gini Holland.
The text is very simple, but tells the story of the American frontier legend clearly. It tells the facts that are known about John Chapman, and also mentions some of the legends that were told about him in his own lifetime already. This book is short enough to easily read in one sitting. The pictures are very realistic paintings, absolutely gorgeous. This book is a keeper in our house!
