Title: The Invisible Friend
Author: Lois Walfrid Johnson
Series: Viking Quest, book 3
Major Themes: Vikings, Norway
Synopsis: As Bree and her brother Devin live through a winter in captivity in a Viking village in Norway, they learn lessons about freedom and trust.
We are racing through the Viking Quest series faster than through most books. It took only three days to read The Invisible Friend aloud; my boys are really into it and very willing to do extra jobs if I’ll keep reading! We just can’t wait to see what happens next to Bree and Devin.
At the end of Viking Quest book #2, Bree had just arrived in Norway; Book 3 begins at that point. Immediately, she makes an enemy of a powerful woman—and sees her long-lost sister! She is also forced to be a slave to Mikkel’s mother, and must make some compromises in order to have a measure of freedom to search for her sister, who seems to be keeping out of sight while trying to communicate with her. Then, just before winter closes in, Devin arrives with ransom money. Mikkel steals the money immediately, however, and puts Devin in jail for the winter.
Throughout the winter, as Bree works for Mikkel’s mother and tries to help his grandmother with her constant bad dreams at night, she struggles with what true freedom is. Can she experience freedom while still a slave? And what about Devin? Can he learn to trust Mikkel, even while he is his prisoner? And what about their sister? Will they ever be able to make contact with her?
The constant action in The Invisible Friend keeps you on the edge of your seat, turning pages to find out what happens next. I’m not sure of the accuracy of Viking life, as portrayed in this book, but it sure makes a good story, and as Bree reads the Bible to the family she shares somewhat of the salvation message. As she learns about true freedom and trust, we learn more about God. This series isn’t really history, but it’s a good Christian story. I’m enjoying it almost as much as my boys.
