Title: Hummy and the Wax Castle
Author: Elizabeth Ernst
Major Themes: Bees, Honeybees, Insects
Synopsis: When Josh was bored one summer, he met a friendly bee who taught him all about herself and her friends.
I remember, when I was maybe about eight years old, looking at a catalog from the Institute for Creation Research. One of the books that caught my eye was Hummy and the Wax Castle. It sounded fascinating, and I really wanted to read it. I never had the chance, though, until I found a copy of it at a book fair a few months ago. I read it to my children for part of our morning routine, and they quite enjoyed it.
Josh was bored, now that school had let out for the summer. His mother challenged him to go outside and learn all he could about bees. As he was drowsily watching them, suddenly one started talking to him! This bee started telling Josh all about a bee’s life, and soon Josh wanted to go to the library and find some books about bees. Over the next few days, he learned more than he had ever imagined there was to know about the fascinating insects!
This story is told with an engaging text, describing the life of bees, and illustrated with detailed drawings that show what is being described. There are drawings of cells from a body, the body parts of a bee, the way a bee’s compound eyes see, and the inside of a hive, among other things. This is the kind of book that my little people love to spend time perusing! I’m glad I finally had the chance to read Hummy and the Wax Castle, after all these years.
