Title: Dolphin Treasure
Author: Wayne Grover
Major Themes: Archaeology, Diving, Dolphins, Florida, Treasure Hunting
Synopsis: When a diver allows the lust for gold to override his common sense, his life is in danger.
I’ve probably read Dolphin Treasure aloud four times now! My children have loved it every time. I’m always struck by the way the author weaves a good life lesson through an exciting adventure.
The first book in the series, Dolphin Adventure, tells how the author rescued a baby dolphin who got a fishhook embedded in his tail. Now, Baby is a grown dolphin, and almost always shows up when Wayne heads out to sea from his home in Florida. Wayne and two friends have discovered the wreck of an old Spanish Galleon and are searching it for treasure. Today, the weather is horrible for diving, but they are desperate to find more treasure. For once, Baby and his family do not show up.
Wayne’s greed for gold ends up causing him to be left alone in an angry ocean when a sudden squall comes up. Will his gold fever be the end of him? He mentally kicks himself over and over for his foolishness—but can find no solution. He is floating among giant waves, getting cold and losing buoyancy. Then, a shark comes up and bumps him. Is this the end?
Your boys, especially, will enjoy this short, easy book. They may come away with a new perspective on earthly riches versus what really matters, although this is not a “Christian” book.
