Title: Dinosaurs by Design
Author: Duane T. Gish
Major Themes: Dinosaurs, Flood, Ice Age
Synopsis: Learn all about dinosaurs from a Biblical perspective in this beautifully-illustrated book!
Dinosaurs by Design has been around for a long time! When I was young (meaning, over 40 years ago), we had a book titled Dinosaurs: Those Terrible Lizards. I loved looking at the pictures! Some 15 or 20 years later, the book was updated and retitled Dinosaurs by Design. The first edition had Brontosaurus in it; soon after it was published that dinosaur was discovered to have the wrong dinosaur’s head. That story is told in the new edition.
There are three sections in this book. The first section lays the foundation for the rest of the book. It talks about how fossils are formed, when dinosaurs lived, if there are dinosaurs in the Bible, and a few other general topics about dinosaurs and fossils. As with the rest of the book, each chapter is only 2-4 pages long.
The second section gives details about the many different types of dinosaurs. It starts with Iguanadon, the first dinosaur to be identified, and then goes on to the horned dinosaurs, the plated dinosaurs, and so on, all the way to Archaeopteryx. Each chapter describes the type of dinosaur, names several examples of species in that type, and gives detailed descriptions of what we know about some of those.
The third section talks about the Flood and what happened to the dinosaurs—why don’t we see them today? It also discusses the Ice Age and human interaction with dragons (dinosaurs!) in history. It is a good way to wrap up this book.
Dinosaurs by Design is a beautifully-illustrated, large hardback book that children will want to look at over and over. At least, my children do! They love studying the colorful pictures of dinosaurs, and always have lots of questions about them. The information is scientifically and Biblically accurate, and the third section helps to make sense of geological evidence and what caused the Ice Age. My children especially enjoyed the last chapter, about possible dinosaurs still alive today!
