Title: David Livingstone: Africa’s Trailblazer
Author: Janet & Geoff Benge
Series: Christian Heroes: Then and Now series
Major Themes: Africa, 1800s, Exploration, Missionaries
Synopsis: A biography of David Livingstone, who did more than anyone else to open up the center of Africa for trade and missions.
As with the other books I’ve read in this series, David Livingstone: Africa’s Trailblazer is well-researched and quite readable. I just read it aloud to my boys and they loved it! What boy wouldn’t be interested in a story that begins with a lion attack?
In this book, we follow David Livingstone from his boyhood in Scotland, where he worked long hours in a cotton mill as a young boy, stealing time wherever he could to read his grandfather’s scientific books, to the end of his life in a hut in Africa. In between, David had a long, adventurous life. He attempted to save African villagers from the Boer slave-stealers in South Africa, pioneered a route across the Kalahari Desert, and explored the Zambezi River, among many other accomplishments. His faithful wife followed him when she could and took care of their children at home the rest of the time.
Anyone interested in the exploration of Africa or missions in Africa would enjoy David Livingstone: Africa’s Trailblazer, as well as anyone who simply enjoys reading a good biography!
