Some stories never grow old, no matter how many times you read them. I just read The Courage of Sarah Noble aloud, and we all enjoyed it. It’s a very simple story, an early reader, but it tells a beautiful story about a brave little girl. There are Indians in the story, so even though it’s about a girl, it appeals to boys as well.
Sarah’s father needed to travel into the wilderness of Connecticut to build a new home for his family, that summer of 1707. He needed someone to cook for him—could 8-year-old Sarah do the job? Her mother’s final words when they parted were, “Keep up your courage, Sarah Noble.” How would she do that?
It took courage to meet the Indians who lived near their new home. It took courage to help her father and cook for him each day in the wilderness. But it took the most courage to stay alone with the Indians when her father had to go back to get the rest of the family. Could she do it?
This is a delightful true story about a real family in the early days of settlement in New England. Sarah did her best with what she had, and learned to appreciate people who were different from herself and her family. This is a perfect book for children to read when they are wanting longer books but not able to read very well yet.
