Title: Build! A Knight’s Castle: Paper Toy Archaeology
Author: Annalie Seaman
Major Themes: Castles, Middle Ages, Knights, Archaeology, Models
Synopsis: Learn about how archaeologists work and how castles were built, as you excavate and build your own model.
I wanted to read this book because one of my sons is very interested in castles and models. I know he would really enjoy this one.
Build! A Knight’s Castle is a story about archaeology. The first part of the book describes how archaeologists work, how they figure out what they are looking at and what things used to look like. In the second part of the book, you are presented with pictures of various objects or remains of structures that might be found around a real archaeological dig of a medieval castle. Then, examples of similar objects or structures from real castles are shown, to help you understand what you are finding. Finally, the last section of the book is a punch-out model of the castle you were “excavating”. The pieces are all mixed up, so you get to sort them out and figure out what goes together, just as if they were real artifacts from a dig.
Build! A Knight’s Castle: Paper Toy Archaeology looks like a lot of fun for any child who enjoys models or archaeology. You can learn a lot about castles from this book.
