Sometimes it’s nice to read a short novel that doesn’t take too much brain power. The books in The Mercie series are like that. I read For Mercie’s Sake not too long ago when I came across it, and was happy to get to read Begging for Mercie this week. It makes a very good follow-up to the first book.

Scottlyn’s life is full. She is preparing for college, caring for her 1-year-old daughter Mercie, and volunteering at the shelter for unmarried pregnant girls that had offered help to her when she needed it. Mercie’s father is dead, killed in a fight in the jail he was in as a result of raping Scottlyn. Then, suddenly, Scottlyn’s life is sent into a tailspin when she is served with legal papers. The parents of Mercie’s father want custody of their granddaughter to take the place of their dead son.

With the help of her boyfriend’s lawyer father and the support of the woman who has virtually adopted the young woman and her baby, Scottlyn prepares to fight for her daughter. Will she learn the lessons God has for her in this trial? And what about Penny? Can she get past her grief over her son and begin healing in a positive way, or will she allow the grief and anger to destroy her and those around her?

I enjoyed the glimpses into the lives of various people. The effects one person’s sin has on so many others was obvious, but God’s healing power was also present. This is a lovely, sweet story with some good lessons portrayed in a natural way.
