Title: Back Yard Pharmacy
Author: Rachel Weaver
Major Themes: Books for Mothers, Health Care, Herbal Remedies, Weeds
Synopsis: A no-nonsense guide to using the “weeds” that grow around your house for healing.
I’ve been waiting several years to read Back Yard Pharmacy! It was exciting when I saw that it was finally in print. God has provided us with medicines around us, masquerading as weeds, and this book shows how to use them to keep our families healthy! I’ve already started a batch of salve, using one of Rachel’s recipes, and look forward to trying it when it’s finished.
Many of the plants she describes and gives recipes for are found growing around the world. The book was written in Pennsylvania, United States, but here in New Zealand we have many of the same plants—Plantain, Comfrey, Mallow, Yarrow, Dandelion, Stinging Nettle…. It excites me to think that we can go out to the backyard and find remedies for so many common problems! Not only does Rachel tell what the various leaves, roots, and flowers are good for, she gives detailed instructions for using them. Recipes abound, not only for medicinal preparations, but even for eating many of these plants at the table! Back Yard Pharmacy is written in a conversational, easy-to-read style, but has obviously been well-researched. This is one book I plan to keep on my shelf; it won’t be loaned out!
