Title: The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog
Author: Douglas Kaine McKelvey
Major Themes: Angels, Dogs, Floods
Synopsis: When a flood surrounds her house, a little girl and her father struggle to survive.
The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog is a very sweet story. A little girl lives with her father in a small house next to a river. Every year, they borrow the neighbor’s mules to work up their small garden—every year until the big flood, that is! When the house is surrounded by angry water in the night, and Papa disappears, what happens to the little girl?
All packed into this short children’s book are grief, love, danger, and ingenuity. You will feel sadness for the little girl, joy at the love in her home, and fear as she is in danger of washing away with her house. I found this story to be believable. It would be encouraging to little children who have fears, that God will take care of them. And the dog? He is a very important part of the story. His mystery will be cleared up before the end of the book. If you’re looking for a lovely story for your young children who like chapter books, The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog would be a good choice.
