Title: Alone in London
Author: Hesba Stretton
Major Themes: Character-building Stories
Synopsis: Old Oliver is given his granddaughter to care for, and God provides him with the help of a young boy, as well.
Old Oliver lived alone behind his small shop in London. Imagine his surprise one evening when, as he closed up for the night, he found a tiny little girl on his step! Her mother, she told him, had left her there with instructions to ask him to care for her until she returned. Oliver fed the little girl and put her to bed, and then found a letter attached to her clothes. To his surprise, he discovered that the little girl was his own granddaughter! Her mother was planning to return in three days to collect her little girl. A young boy, Tony, who saw the little girl when she was dropped off is skeptical of the mother’s return, and sure enough, she soon sent a note saying she had decided to go with her husband to India. Would Oliver please keep little Dolly until her return?
Tony became a great help to Oliver in caring for Dolly—until he broke his leg and was taken to a hospital. Even that proved to be a blessing, however, for he learned to know Jesus while at the hospital. Would Dolly live until her mother’s return, however? And how would Oliver cope with being Alone in London, as he grew older and more senile?
Alone in London is a sweet story from the 1800s of the love of Jesus and His care for His own even in extreme poverty.
