Major Themes: Missionaries, Nicaragua, Pablo Yoder
Synopsis: Young José Adán desperately wanted love—how would he find it?
I remember the time, some 15 years ago, when I first read a book by Pablo Yoder. It was Angels Over Waslala, and related the trials his family had endured living in Nicaragua, being robbed over and over, and how God protected them. Since that first book, he has written quite a few others, and every one of them has been a fascinating account of God at work in a real person’s life. All for Love is one of his recent releases. It’s been on my shelf for awhile, but since I was needing to spend time resting this week I was able to read it. What a worthwhile story!
José Adán spent his life searching for love. His parents both loved him, but if he lived with his father, he had to endure mistreatment from his stepmother and her children; if he lived with his mother, he lived in poverty and couldn’t go to school. The young man was caught between two difficult situations. Eventually he gained the education he needed to become a teacher, and along the way learned to know the Mennonites in Waslala, near his home in Nicaragua. After becoming a Christian, he taught in their school—but that led to more conflict in his life and to his backsliding and turning away from God when he became romantically involved with a student. Would José Adán ever find the love he so desperately craved? Would he ever be able to give up the human love his heart so yearned for, to have the approval of God?
All for Love is very well-written. I had a hard time putting the book down. It’s quite a long book, but the stories of José Adán’s life are told so well that it keeps you turning pages to find out what will happen next. If you are at all interested in missions, or in how God works in a person’s life, you will not be disappointed with All for Love.
