We are enjoying reading through the series, The Adventures of Lily Lapp. Mary Ann Kinsinger has written this series based on her experiences growing up as an Amish girl. In this second book in the series, A New Home for Lily, Lily’s family has just moved to Pennsylvania.
Lily does not like their new home. It is ugly and small, and she has to sleep at the end of the hallway because there aren’t enough bedrooms. Then there are the challenges of a new school—Lily immediately knows she does not like Aaron Yoder or Effie Kauffman. How will she manage to survive this school year?
There are many adventures in store for Lily during her first year in Pennsylvania. She gets a new doll—and then is greatly disappointed with what happens next. A billy goat causes trouble, and so does a pumpkin pie. Tragedy befalls the family’s cow. There are also fun times, like sleeping in the barn, and making jello—although that turned out very funny! One day, Lily gets a great surprise when the children are sent to Grandma’s house for the day, although she is quite disappointed as well. Near the end of the Lapp family’s first year in their new home, Lily is delighted to have her cousin move close to them—but will she and Hannah still be the best of friends?
These are lovely stories of a little girl growing up with a good family and community. She faces many struggles like other children, but has loving parents to guide her through them. You will laugh frequently at her observations and mishaps, and if you are the oldest sister in a family of mostly boys, you may well be able to identify quite closely with Lily’s feelings about boys. My oldest daughter can! She liked this quote, among others, “He (God) knew she needed a sister much, much more than she needed another brother.”
